Carson, he created a policy that allowed white men to burn Navajo elds and homes, and made the stealing and killing of the Navajo Nation livestock acceptable. In 1864 the 8000 starving men, women and children were marched 300 miles by COL. Carson's army to Fort Summer, New Mexico this march was called \" The Long W \" by the Navaho people. Many died along the way, and died during the four years of imprisonment. In 1868 after signing a treaty with the U.S., remaining Navajos were nally allowed to return to designate lands currently occupied in the Four Comets area of the US
