The principle of totality means:

a) similar offenders that committed similar circumstances should receive similar sentences

b) taking into account the totality of unique historic and background factors. Aboriginal offenders should be subject to imprisonment only very rarely.

c) if consecutive sentences are imposed they taken together should not be unduly harsh or long

d) all alternatives to imprisonment must be considered in their totality imprisonment should be the last resort only.
