Programming in MATLAB

The main question asks the following :

Create a new categorical variable named Continent for usage by continent data. This variable should have the following categories

Europe

North America

South America

Asia

Africa

How do you use the MERGECATS function (MATLAB) to throw all the data for the countries in a variable named Continent. It's just extremely frustrating and I can't get it to work. If the question doesn't make sense because I didn't explain it well enough, feel free to close it.
