The school district is moving away from the computer lab concept and moving computers into the classrooms to allow teachers to fully integrate the use of computers with their lessons. You are in charge of the computer integration in the local middle school. There is currently one large computer lab. This is will be emptied (in project scope) and eventually repurposed (out of project scope). Each student will be issued a tablet for use during the school year. There are 30 classrooms in this school. You must establish enough wireless access points (WAP) to support the student population of approximately 600 students. The classrooms must have additional electrical outlets located throughout the room and not just around the periphery. The decision has been made to install small dimension columns and route electrical and network (for printers) wiring from the ceiling crawl space into the individual classrooms. A dedicated teacher station will be created and include overhead projection capability for demonstration purposes.
The project will include purchasing the entire networking equipment and installation. A network closet has been identified and will need to be outfitted with required hardware. The network will require log-in permissions. The school staff will have the ability to whitelist approved website and block website with inappropriate content.
The entire project must be complete over the summer break (10 weeks). The number of days for each activity is based on the schedule requirements.
Instructions: Estimate the number of resources needed for each of the following skill sets and estimated hours. The number of days is project days. It is not calendar days (includes work and non-work days). Each work day is assumed to be 8 hours. Always round up to the next whole day. Use the spreadsheet template to complete your work. Cells highlighted are to be calculated and filled in.
1. Create a WAP map for the school to determine the number of WAPs needed. Resource: WAP technician (1) estimated 5 hours.
2. Identify network equipment for purchase. Resource: WAP technician (1) estimated 8 hours
3. Procure network equipment. Resource: procurement specialists (2) 30 hours
4. Build out network closet. Construction personnel (1) estimated 16 hours, then a painter (1) estimated 8 hours, then IT technician (2) estimated 24 hours
5. Run cable in ceiling space from each WAP back to the network closet. Resource: cable installers to complete work within 5 project days. Estimated: 200 hours
6. Run cable for 2 network printers in each classroom back to network closet. Resource: network technician. Estimated 80 hours and must be completed within 16 days
7. Add 16 additional outlets in each classroom. Resource: electricians. Electrical work must be completed within 10 days. Estimated 150 hours
8. Install and test WAP hardware. WAP technicians. Estimated 100 hours and must be completed within 10 days
9. Install teacher station computer and monitor in each classroom. Resource: IT technicians. Estimated 120 hours and must be completed within 15 days
10. Installation of projection screen in each classroom. Resources: construction personnel to install ceiling mount and screen. Estimated 240 hours and must be completed within 10 days. Calculate the number of construction personnel needed. Electricians to install screen control buttons. Estimated 60 hours and you have a team of five electricians to get the work done.
11. Install and test overhead projectors in each classroom. Resources: IT technicians. Estimated 4 hours per classroom. Calculate the total number of estimated hours. Calculate the number of resources to get the work done in 5 days.
12. Set up and test network including permissions. Resources: system administrator (1). Estimated 150 hours. Calculate the number of days.
