The take-home examination is a written assignment of 2000-3000 words (main text, excl. list of references) that is completed individually by the students. The examination consists of the written assignment and a Jupyter Notebook file (.ipynb) (and all the files required to run the code, eg. research data, also possible output files). The Notebook file is used to present the Python code used in the assignment to both process and to analyse the textual data used (detailed instructions follow below). The aim of the final assignment is to do a distant reading analysis of your own. The assignment is "a mini research project, where you go through and reflect on the main parts of the distant reading research process. It is equally important to present a relevant research case and to show how the computational analysis is conducted; in general, the assignment exemplifies how these two areas are tied together. The final assignment should include the following parts: Introduction -Frame the research problem, explain the purpose of the research and present research questions. Your research question needs to include elements that cannot be answered without computational text analysis. -Discuss the choices made regarding the research material and the text analysis method: how do you intend to achieve the research results? Research material: acquisition, preprocessing, and limitations -Describe more in detail your research material: explain its provenance and how you have preprocessed it for your analysis (why has it been processed). Reflect on the limitations of your research material. -Present and explain your code in Jupyter Notebook, but write "what you have selected / pre-processed and why" in the written assignment. Analysis and visualization -Use some method(s) presented during the course in your analysis (or if relevant, some other distant reading or computational text analysis method of your choice). Present and explain your code in Jupyter Notebook, but write "what you do and find" in the written assignment. It is ok to use Antconc for this (no programming required), but in this case use the Markdown cells to explain carefully your analysis with Antconc. -Present at least one relevant visualization as part of your analysis. This can be done with Excel or other online tools (Voyant, Rawgraph, Palladio, Recogito ). You can also create your visualization with Python in Jupyter Notebook (show the code, then add the output to your written assignment). Discussion -Reflect on the results, evaluate their validity (problems), and discuss steps for future research (how this research could be improved in the future, what interesting new research questions or avenues did your analysis open). List of References (not included in the word count) Practical instructions and minimum requirements concerning the assignment -do not indicate your name in the assignment text nor in the Jupyter Notebook file (the examination is conducted anonymously), eg. do not use pathnames in your code that would reveal your identity (use the root in the path, eg. ./my_example_data.txt) -submit your assignment in two files: 1) the main text as doc or pdf, and 2) a zip-file with everything else (Jupyter Notebook file, research material if needed, possible output files). I should be able to run your code. -length of the written assignment is 2000-3000 words (list of references, images or tables containing text eg. code, output of results, is not counted; just the main text) -there is no minimum length for your Jupyter Notebook file, but it has to include the python code where you 1) preprocess your research material (explain it in the section two of the written assignment) and 2) use a distant reading method for analysis (explained in section three of your written assignment). The use of Antconc for analysis can replace 2), thus the method & analysis in programming. This can be e.g. collocation analysis or corpus comparison, but in this case explain how you use Antconc in the Markdown cells in the Jupyter Notebook. -the assignment has to include at least one visual element as part of the analysis (image, figure, table) -you can use the text material used during the labs, but your assignment must be independent (own, relevant research case) and cannot replicate the research cases and analysis presented in the labs -your research case can use source material in any language, but you have to explain your analysis and results for an English-language reader. Source material in Swedish, Finnish, Italian, German, French, and Spanish can be treated as English source material. -the assignment needs to include references to at least 4 items from the reading list or from the lecture slides. You do not need to refer to general coding instructions as part of your conding, but you can use references when reflecting on theoretical aspects (e.g. the use and functioning of a Python library/package) or if you use a defined, particular piece of code by somebody else. Use the references in your main text. Depending on your case, it is good to think about and add references to previous research done on your topic.
