The topic for this project is "Sleeping Habits of College Students."College students at a large state university completed a survey about their academic and personal life. Questions ranged from "How many credits are you registered for this semester?" to "Would you define yourself as a vegetarian?" Four sections of an introductory statistics course were chosen at random from all the sections of introductory statistics courses offered at the university in the semester when the survey was conducted, and the 312 students who completed the survey were students registered in one of the four chosen sections. In this exercise, we will use a subset of variables from the survey and use the collected data to answer questions. Note that (1) these are real data, and (2) the symbol * in the worksheet means that this observation is not available (this is known as a "missing value").The data for this project can be found in StatCrunch. Log on to StatCrunch and click on Data Sets. Then search "MATH 1342 Final Project (Glaser)". A description of the variables included in the dataset is below.

VARIABLE NAME ----- DESCRIPTION

Math-----Math SAT score

Verbal-----Verbal SAT score

Credits-----Number of credits the student is registered for

Year-----Year in college (1 = Freshman, 2 = Sophomore, 3 = Junior, 4 = Senior

Exer------Time (in minutes) spent exercising in a typical day

Sleep----Time (in hours) spent sleeping in a typical day

Veg-------Are you a vegetarian (yes, no, some)

Cell------Do you own a cell phone (yes, no)

Reflect on Question

Researchers often predict what data will say before analyzing it using previous studies or based on their personal experience with the population they are studying. Before analyzing the data, think about the following question and use your intuition and/or experience.

What are the sleeping habits of students at the university, in particular, do students get the recommended minimum 8 hours of sleep in a typical day? Do the data provide evidence that the average number of sleep students get is lower than 8?

try and predict what the results will show.

20

Analyze Data

Identify the variable relevant to the question of interest and state whether the variable is categorical or quantitative. Also indicate what the null and alternative hypothesis are. (10 points)

Include at least one meaningfulgraphicaldisplay (pie chart, bar graph, histogram, boxplot, etc.) related to the question(s) and interpret the display. (20 points)

Conduct the appropriate hypothesis test. Include and interpret the test statistic and p-value relevant to the hypothesis test conducted. (20 points)

50

Draw Conclusions

Summarize the results from the hypothesis test in context of the current question making sure to state whether the null hypothesis is rejected or not and reasoning for this conclusion. Use = 0.05. (10 points)

Recall your answer noted in theReflect on Questionsection above. In at least describe how your initial expectations differ (or not) from the actual results. (10 points)

Put your researcher cap on! Who would benefit from this analysis and why should anyone care? In at least describe how these results could be used in practice. (10 points)
