RESEARCH PAPER

This is a research paper. A research paper should be well written and well researched. A well written paper should provide an in-depth perspective on the topic. This can be achieved by utilizing research via reading journal articles and utilizing websites to gather information and knowledge on the subject matter to gain an understanding of the topic so that the team may write a research paper concerning the topic of research.

The paper should be between 3-5 pages in length (not including the cover/title page or reference page)

The paper should be in essay style addressing the issues which are given in the paper/report outline. Do not use bullet points or numbering, as doing so will result in a deduction of points.

There should be a minimum of references that are peer-reviewed scholarly articles. These references shall be from peer-reviewed journals which have been published within the last ten (10) years (2006 - 2020). Other references may be information obtained from a credible website (such as the CDC).

Failure to follow this guideline will result in a deduction of points from the paperTitle Page: Please include the following in order on the title page of the paper. This information should be centered on the title page. See page header under APA format for additional requirements.

Title of the paper

Clayton State University

HCMG 3701 Introduction to Epidemiology

APA format:

Alignment/Line Spacing: All documents following APA guidelines are required to be aligned left and double-spaced throughout the entire document. Be sure not to include additional spacing between paragraphs, headings, etc.

Font Type and Size: Times New Roman. APA requires 12 point font size. (Note: use of other typeset and font will result in severe deductions from paper grade)

Paragraph Indentation: All papers typed in APA format require paragraphs to be indented one-half inch (.5). This can be achieved by striking the TAB on the keyboard.

Page Header: Beginning on the very first page (title page) and running continually throughout the document, a page header is utilized. The page header should appear one-half inch down from the top margin (you can use the header option in word). It includes the running head flush left and the page number flush right. On the title page, the page header consists of the words Running head (the R in Running is capitalized) followed by a colon and the title of the paper (which will be the research topic the disease or event) in all capital letters. Example: Running head: HPV VACCINE UTILIZATION. FYI: There is a maximum of 50 characters including spaces after the colon. Subsequent pages should not use the words Running head, but will include in capital letters the title of the paper (i.e. research topic). Example: HPV VACCINE UTILIZATION.

Citations & Reference: for every citation there should be a reference and for every reference there should be a citation. Always provide appropriate credit, otherwise it is considered plagiarism. When paraphrasing, the period mark should be placed after the actual reference citation. Example: (Brown, 2014). For the reference page, the word Reference should be utilized and centered on the page.

RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINES: Please use the following outline below in preparing the research paper.

Part A: Context Decide and state who you are (real or fictionalized). Provide a brief synopsis of the following:

Please identify the organization/facility/agency, which the team is a manager of a health care organization, a local public health official, a consumer advocate, or a community-based non-profit organization in Georgia (local, regional or state-wide). In other words, what is the name of the organization, where is it located, and whom do you serve?

What is your position title and area(s) of responsibility in this facility/organization/agency?

Part B: Facts about the Disease/Event

Name of the disease or topic

Identify the disease or event. Is it an infectious disease, chronic disease, genetic disease, occupational disease, environmentally caused disease, or an intentional or unintentional injury?

Etiology (cause) of the disease (event) and how is it contracted or obtained?

If it is an Infectious disease, then answer the following:

What is the pathogen (is it a bacteria, virus, etc.), what is the reservoir, what vectors are involved, and what is the mode of transmission?

Are there other etiologic factors that may cause the disease?

If it is a Chronic disease, then answer the following:

What are the risk factors leading to the disease (genetic, behavioral/lifestyle, specific exposures, etc.)?

Are there other etiologic factors that may cause the disease?

If it is an Event, then answer the following:

Is the event caused by an environmental exposure, occupational hazard, or injury (accidental/non-accidental)? Or a combination?

Are there other etiologic factors that may cause the event?

Burden of the disease or event:

Please provide rates (data), as this provides the why there is a problem or an issue that needs to be addressed either by the facility/organization/agency or the community or both. Below is the data that must be provided in this research paper. Failure to provide this data that is both accurate and timely (most recent) will result in a loss of points from overall grade.

What is the morbidity (prevalence, incidence), age-adjusted mortality rate(s), case-fatality/survival rates in Georgia and the U.S. (please provide these rates and note if these are percentages or per 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000)? Are these rates (GA vs. U.S.) the same or different? Why?

Which groups of people are most at risk of having this disease/event? Why are they at an elevated risk? Please explain.

Effects of the disease/event:

Describe/explain the symptoms or factors that are the causative issues for this disease or event.

If applicable, describe or explain the disease progression (stages or levels of disease).

Describe or explain the complications, side effects, co-morbidities that may have an overall or long-term effect of this disease or event.

Monetary Effects of the disease/event:

What are the impacts of this problem on the U.S. healthcare delivery system and in Georgia in terms of the financial burden of the monies spent or costs for treatment? (In other words what is the dollar amount?)

Prevention and treatment:

What can be done for the people who are at risk to prevent, treat, reduce or cure their risk of the disease/event? Discuss some primary and secondary prevention strategies or interventions that may be available to eliminate or reduce the burden of the disease or event for the people who are at risk.

Hospital/clinical/facility precautions and/or potential impacts on one of these agencies in Georgia:

Discuss what can be done systematically by a hospital, clinic, facility, organization or agency to guard against or to reduce the burden of the disease or event on these entities.

What are the potential costs (both financially and emotionally) to the patients, staff, businesses, family, and the community of the disease from spreading (if infectious) and/or the disease or event from increasing in the population versus preventing the disease or event? Explain.

Public health implications in Georgia:

What can be done systematically to prevent this disease or event in the home, school, work place, and community? Who needs to be a partner in this effort?

Part C: Managerial Responsibility & Program Development

Given what the team now knows about the disease or the event, in the teams management role for the organization/facility/agency, how would the team develop a program that could help alleviate, reduce or mitigate the problem from a management perspective? You are looking at a specific problem (disease or event) from which one can obtain real numbers and review the programs and plans that other communities or organizations have taken to combat the problem. Then ask, from a healthcare managers point of view what will work best for the situation. Keep in mind the following issues:

How to prevent the disease or the event?

How will the team promote health?

How will the team help people in the community through partnerships with other organizations?
