There are many different kinds of decks of cards. One class of decks is called Tarot decks, which

also come in many different types. The most common type of Tarot deck contains a total of 78 cards divided into two classes often referred to as the small cards and the trumps. The small cards are similar to the cards of a conventional deck of cards. There is a total of 56 small cards, divided into four suits. So each suit containing a total of 14 cards; 10 cards numbered from Ace to 10 as well as 4 court cards. The trumps have no equivalent in a conventional deck of cards. There are 22 trumps, each of which is given a unique number between 0 and 21 as well as a name such as "The Lovers","Death" or "The Tower". Tarot decks are often used for divination or fortune-telling, which is carried out by a particular

number of cards being drawn and laid out in a particular pattern, called a spread, which supposedly is capable of providing some kind of insight into the future.

Suppose that we are using a Tarot deck like the one described above, and doing a simple spread

of 12 cards such that only the identities of the cards drawn, not the order in which they are drawn, is taken into account for the interpretation.

The question are:

  • Traditionally the trump with the number 0, which is called the Fool, is thought of as the

first card in a Tarot deck. What is the probability that a spread drawn by shuffling all

the cards together includes the Fool?

  • if we instead create the spread by drawing 6 small cards and 6 trumps, what is the

probability of the spread including the Fool?

  • Traditionally the card called Ace of Wands is thought of as the first of the small cards. What is the probability that a spread created by drawing 6 small cards and 6 trumps include both the Fool and Ace of Wands?

I was thinking of using the permutations formula for these questions but I'm not sure if that is the correct approach.
