Question:
- These questions are on Situational/Contingency Leadership. Situational factors can include the environment inside a firm, firm culture, outside environments, competition, regulatory environment, personal factors of individuals, etc. The definition of situational factors is broad. Situational/Contingency Leadership in short says situational factors influence performance outcomes. Leader effectiveness is increased when there is a matching of the leadership style with the needs of the situation. A leader might be effective in one set of circumstance and ineffective in another set of circumstances. 1. To answer this question you need to go back to watch the "Leadership Substitutes and Neutralizers" video. Substitutes and Neutralizers are individual, task, environmental, and organizational characteristics that tend to outweigh a leader's ability to affect subordinate satisfaction and performance. Leadership neutralizers are factors that prevents a manager from taking actions to improve work performance or makes the actions that the manager does perform irrelevant. How can organizational culture be a substitute for or a neutralizer of leadership?
- 2. Watch the Hersey Blanchard Video, review the Vecchio paper and explain why and how matching leadership style to situational factors (capabilities of the followers) led to enhanced performance (on some of the performance measures in some of the groups). The Vecchio paper is an attempt to see if Situational Leadership theory as proposed by Hersey and Blanchard can be validated. Task behavior is on the X axis. Relationship behavior is on the Y axis. And inside the figure are different types of leadership styles. Look on page 449 on the left side of the page is the write up for table 4. In this paper we see partial support for the Hersey Blanchard Model of Leadership. Explain to me how and why this paper offers support of the Hersey Blanchard Model.
- 3. Contingency leadership is a theory that states a leader's effectiveness is contingent upon how his or her leadership style matches the situation. Situational leadership, on the other hand, is a theory that states a leader should adapt his or her leadership style to match the situation. The main difference between situational leadership and contingency theory is that situational leadership says a leader can and should change their style to the situation, while contingency theory does not. Both theories say when there is a match between leaders' style and the needs of the situation then the leader will be more effective. Leadership for some people is fixed and unchangeable and for others leadership is flexible and adaptable. You can think about the issue of flexible leadership at many levels – choosing the right leader, training potential leaders, analyzing situational factors to match training and or selection etc. Discuss some situational factors that influence leader success. Why does matching the situation or situational factors with a leaders abilities lead to better leader follower outcomes?
