This week I went to the Lucas County Court House to observe Tarik handle 2 CSB cases he was defending. One case the mother had deserved the right back to her child. She had done everything by attending child-parent classes, remained drug free and was compliant with her mental health visits. CSB afreed that she was to be in favor to get her child back, but the Casa disagreed and wanted the judge to still keep the child with the grandmother. The judge continued to the case to a further date as he could not decide. The second case was wuick and continued to a further date. Tarik and I talked how he is appointed these cases by the court since he is a public defender and every other Wednesday he goes to court where he is handed atleast 2-3 new cases mostly CSB related. He stated they tie up his calendar each for about a good year.

Today I went with him his law office as he had to prepare for a big trial on Tuesday. He let me look over the case file and even make a call to his defendant to remind of her court appearance. This case was sad as the 1 1/2 year old child was taken away due to a fentanyl overdose that happened in the home while the mom was home. The mother blames the father for bringing the drugs into the house when he shoud not have even been there in the first place. This case was heartbreaking to me.

I then helped organize, file and close out at least 100 case files Tarik had already completed and had sitting in a pile on another desk. Once I organized the cases to be filed, I entered pertinant information into a an Excel sheet so he would know the basic case information and where the file was going to be located should he ever need to go back to it again. I met his aunt Cherefe Kadri who was working in her office on her case load for the week. I plan to shadow her Tuesday this week as she handles for criminial and probate type cases.

Tarik explained how he is paid as a public defender by Lucas County. Not much is left after paying building rent, malpractice insurance andlife. He makes $75/hr per case he is appointed and all of his cases cap out at $1000 no matter how many more hours he puts time in for the case. He does handle few private cases on the side but a bulk of his work load is court appointed.
