This week we learned about 3 different types of distributions - the distribution of a population of individuals, the distribution of a particular sample of individuals from that population, and the distribution of means. Select a variable that you are going to measure and explain the difference in these 3 distributions to someone who has never taken a statistics class before.

Cut up 90 small slips of paper, and write each number from 1 to 9 on 10 slips each. Put the slips in a large bowl and mix them up. Part A - Take out a slip, write down the number on it, and put it back. Repeat this process 20 times. Make a histogram and figure out the mean and the variance of the result. Part B - Take 2 slips out, figure out their mean, write it down, and put the slips back. Repeat this process 20 times. Make a histogram; then figure out the mean and the variance of this distribution of means. Part C - Repeat the process again, this time taking out 3 slips at a time. Again, make a histogram and figure the mean and the variance of the distribution of means. Cut and paste your histograms into your discussion response. Discuss the similarities and differences between the histograms (e.g. what do you notice about the mean, spread, and shape of the histograms?).
