Throughout the semester, you will have the opportunity to design your own science practicals, or experiments, that you will conduct live with materials you find around your home. Your instructor may provide some specific ideas, or you may design an experiment based on questions you have about your learning so far in the course.

You may research ideas for experiments related to your course learning, or your instructor may give you ideas as well.

Directions:

Design an experiment related to your learning in the course so far, and complete the following planning steps for the experiment. Once you have done that, safely conduct your experiment, recording your results.

Your instructor will discuss the results of your experiment with you during your Discussion Based Assessments each semester.

Questions:

Answer the following questions for your "Design Your Own Experiment" activity.

Experiment Choice: Ohm's Law: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/ohms-law

Current in a wire is related to resistance and voltage ( V = IR). If current is the dependent variable you measure, then choose voltage or resistance as the independent variable and hypothesize what will happen if you change your independent variable. Choose only one independent variable.

  1. What do you want to find out?
  2. How will you find out the answer to your question? What procedure will you follow?
  3. Describe your independent and dependent variables.
  4. How will you ensure safety?
  5. Draw diagram of your experiment set-up: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/ohms-law
  6. What materials do you need: use materials shown in simulation https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/ohms-law
  7. Conduct the experiment using the website: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/ohms-law
  8. Record your results in bullet form, data form, or narrative form.
  9. Analyze your results. What can you conclude? What would you do differently? Where would you go next?
