Understanding fallacies improves both critical thinking and writing skills. It also helps one to identify the causes of problems and solutions to them. There are many fallacies (for examples see links in left margin), and they range from an appeal to emotion, such as 'wishful thinking', to 'appeal to novelty' and 'hasty generalization'. This writing task requires demonstrating your understanding of how fallacious thinking (faulty causation) can create difficulties. There are many fallacies from which to choose, but be sure the example you provide is one that could realistically be encountered in your chosen profession.

Begin with a Summary of main points in which you describe a serious workplace problem created by an employee due to fallacious thinking on their part. State how the problem was resolved and what steps are taken to avoid a recurrence. (four to five sentences)

Under Background, state the purpose of the report along with how the problem was discovered along with the key cause(s). (three to four sentences)

Under Approach and Findings describe the steps taken in resolving the problem and discuss the significance of the findings. (three to four sentences)

In Conclusion, indicate what needs to be done and who is responsible for implementation. Note what potential drawbacks (if any) the proposed solution may have, but clearly state how it will ensure similar problems are avoided in the future. (three to four sentences)
