Unintentional plagiarism is a common occurrence and often one that students don't realize they are still responsible for. In addition to the common plagiarism mistakes, students can even plagiarize themselves. We all know that it is unethical and against plagiarism policy to reuse someone else's work, but it is also considered plagiarism to submit something for a course that you have already submitted yourself. For example, I have had students that previously failed a course and then proceed to reuse a paper they submitted for the failed course. Any resubmission of material is identified on the Turn It In report that professors review and is considered plagiarism, regardless of the original author. Students should ask permission from each instructor if wishing to resubmit previously submitted work. The best way to avoid this is to do new research on a subject and rewrite a paper from scratch. However, if you do wish to reuse material, it is critical to reach out to your professor and discuss the matter with them for guidance. Plagiarism is a very serious matter of academic integrity and one that requires a great deal of diligence and effort to prevent.
