Urban hot islands are becoming more of an issue as climate change continues to negatively affect our environments. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency "Heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. Structures such as buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and re-emit the sun's heat more than natural landscapes such as forests and water bodies." (EPA, 2023). California is considered the most populated state in our country and has a population of 39,538,223 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). Due to the high amount of population there has been a high amount of expansion for industrial, commercial, and residential buildings. As the state continues to be populated with citizens, local governments need to make planning efforts to try to combat climate and air-quality issues.

Our organization plans to plant trees in industrial and urban areas to offset urban hot spots and add to our atmosphere. According to an article by Climate Central, these hot spots arise in metropolitan areas due to high amounts of concrete and asphalt to build industrial, commercial, and residential buildings (Climate Central 2023).This means that it is generally hotter in temperature from the buildings holding onto heat on warmer days. Which can have a negative effect in these areas, resulting in citizens turning to their electricity on the warmer days to turn on air conditioners.

Most electric companies that supply power rely on fossil fuel plants, which leads to an increase in air pollutants and green-house gas emissions. (EPA, 2023). The temperature in these areas are also higher due to there being little to no greenery. Trees and shrubbery can aid in cooling areas, as well as adding oxygen to our atmosphere. We would like to raise donations and receive grants to be able to partner with local counties to plant trees along streets. As well as help in the industrial and commercial planning to design cooling efforts that plant grass, trees, and other forms of vegetation to better offset heat absorption on buildings.

Mission

Our mission is to "build world where there are 1,000,000 times the number of trees than humans and build a better ecosystem with cleaner air.". The biggest heat island in California is within the Riverside and San Bernardino counties, which combine together to make one big heat island. (CalEPA, 2023). Our organization would like to focus our efforts on these 2 counties to begin with. Both of these counties have populations with over 2 million and combined span a little over 20,000 square miles. With these efforts we hope to improve the climate in these areas.

Our organization's goal is to provide the populations of San Bernardino and Riverside counties with long term improved air quality and to lower the heat signature of these areas. With proper planning, planting urban trees throughout an area can have an effect of lowering temperatures by up to ten degrees (Weeden, 2023) In counties with a high risk of heat related illness such as heat strokes, a ten degree decrease in temperature could greatly help the population who is at higher risk of suffering from these illnesses. Planting urban trees will also help improve the air and water quality throughout the area, allowing for local greenery to improve. This will also have an impact on the value of the community, increasing the overall appeal of the area should increase the prices of properties throughout both counties.

Financing

Given that we will be operating as a nonprofit, we know that a majority of our income and financing will be from philanthropic bodies and government programs. Our organization is looking to receive 70% of funding from grants from the California Air Resources Board, in order to do so we have to abide guidelines to ensure that our organizations efforts, "are spent to reduce [greenhouse gas] emissions, benefit the most vulnerable communities and do so in [a] transparent way,"(Whieldon, 2018).

In order for our organization to be successful we need to account for the base costs of starting our business and the operations we want to fulfill. This includes equipment, labor, as well as a facility to house all equipment for projects. After researching landscaping companies, we estimate that the initial cost and operating costs of the first 5 years will average around $2,800,000.Thiscameoffoftheestimateof$60,000 in startup costs and labor of 6 employees, and then an average of $40,000inmonthlycosts(SharpSheets,2023).Wewillalsobeneedingtoaccountfortreesandothervegetationcosts.Onaveragetreescostanywherefrom$95-$255, depending on the size and species of the tree (Lawn Starter 2023). We plan to purchase trees on the cheaper size meaning that they are saplings that need maintenance and time to grow into big trees.Partnering with organizations and philanthropic bodies will give us grant money and support in our mission to plant trees and improve air quality.
