W6 Discussion Question 1: Intersecting Systems, Overlapping Interests

Purpose: Throughout this course, you have been learning about some different communities and expressions of queer culture that have occurred throughout particular moments in U.S. history. In addition, you have learned a lot about the processes of marginalization, oppression, and stigma, and how these have historically been navigated by queer fold and LGBTQ+ communities. This discussion question will engage your thinking at the community level as you consider how marginalizing pressures have similarly and differentially weighed on various groups.

Post: Explore the relationship between LGBTQ+ and other minority or advocacy communities. You may discuss one or more communities as points of comparison, contrast, and shared struggles. (Throughout the term and in your resources this week, explicit linkages to the struggle for racial justice by Black Americans have been explored as one example of parallel minority advocacy. Clearly, people also have overlapping identities that might make them invested in one or more "different" fights for equality and justice.)

Explore commonalities and differences between selected aspects of these communities (recognizing that this will necessitate generalizations that will only apply to some, not all, members of any particular community). Some points you may consider discussing: key issues, important histories, significant achievements, methods of resistance, interactions with one another or other communities. You can use individual examples to support your main points, but your post should clearly reference societal-level pressures that are exerted similarly and differently upon groups.
