Washington state adopted the Washington Law Against Discrimination in 1947.The U.S. Congress enacted Title VII in 1964 which prohibited discrimination in employment based on race/color, religion, sex or national origin. These laws were enacted due to many years of systemic oppression of African-Americans in this country. Both these laws have been expanded to include other protected classes. The basic premise of these laws is that one should not have fewer opportunities in their livelihood because of an immutable characteristic. In other words, something one cannot change or reasonably be expected to change, like one's skin color, national origin, sexual orientation, religious faith, or disability.

Creating legal rights and enforcing these rights through the judicial branch of the government to effect social change has brought proponents and critics. Some resist government intervention, and grow resentful of what they see as "entitlement programs" to which they are not beneficiaries.Younger generationsinvite older generations to think beyond the "identity politics" that defined the Civil Rights movement.DEI (diversity, equity & inclusion) experts lean toward reconciliation strategies over confrontational litigation.

Based on the reading in this class and personal experiences and/or outside research, please write three paragraph essay in the following format. The first paragraph should explain the history and current state of anti-discrimination laws in America. For the second paragraph, choose one protected status under the employment laws (like religion, sex, race/ethnicity, national origin, disability, etc.) and discuss what types of employer conduct would be prohibited in relation to an employee who is in that protected class. For the third paragraph, please share your ideas and opinions on whether you think the anti-discrimination laws have been effective and/or have caused more division in society. If you have any ideas on how to affect the social change imagined by the anti-discrimination laws, please share them!
