Project Legacy took place after a catastrophic natural disaster left the city of New Orleans in desperate need for recovery. The city's veteran hospital, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Medical Center was one of the city's greatest healthcare resources that found themselves to be greatly impacted by the Hurricane. The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) diligently came to the city's aid in a plan to rebuild the healthcare system in which congress passed a over 1-billion-dollar fund to build a new center for the community with the new initiative to build a center around what veterans needed and wanted. The project grew to become a great success and the healthcare system surged to recover from the horrific natural event. I appreciated the medical center's drive to building the new hospital to be a place where the community could revert to in a time of need; being able to host 1,000 individuals and withstand 5 days without electricity or water. The way in which the VA hospital was able to build back their mission to serve their community was both courageous as well as remarkable.
