We take for granted many of the things we do as part of our daily routine. Common tasks such as cleaning ourselves is practically automatic, in that we do not have to think through the procedure step-by-step. However, what if you have to describe the procedure to an intelligent alien creature that has no concept of the human cleaning process? Problem to solve: Explain the cleaning ritual of an average human to Mr. Cat. Initial state: Human just finished a rigorous exercise session and is feeling sweaty in gym clothes. Final state: Human is cleaned up and feeling fine and ready to dispense kitty treats. 1. Select a cleansing method (e.g., a bath, or a shower, or a moist towelette, etc.). 2. Construct the following two diagrams (hierarchical graph, or flowchart. or list, etc.): For Diagram #1, show only the overall set of tasks at a high level of abstraction. In other words, list just the major steps in the process, but ignore most of the low level details. For Diagram #2, select just one of the major steps and break it down into sub-steps. Use as many sub-steps as needed to give a reasonably complete description of the details. Some sub-steps may have their own sub-steps. Example: For a bath, perhaps one major step is filling the tub. Some sub-steps might include stating how to activate the drain stopper. how to turn on/off the water, how to sense the water temperature, and so on
