Week 5 Part 1 of Chapter 8

Chapter 8 is dense with very important information covering topics related to properly onboarding new hires, workplace discrimination, and sexual harassment, creating zero-tolerance policies to protect your organization, the Family & Medical Leave Act, Compensations, employee evaluations, discipline, and legal termination.

To assist in the retention of all this material, we will split Chapter 8 into two weeks and this week our focus will be on pages 139 - through the middle of page 149, stopping after 8.4/Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

Part 1: Onboarding employees

Please read pages 139-the bottom of page 141 relative to offer letters and employment handbooks and view the first two video resources relative to the importance of having a good new hire orientation and useful handbook. For Part 1, please share the following:

• What stood out to you or impacted you most about the 1^st video resource relative to the importance of onboarding new hires? Also, include any personal experiences you have had (positive or negative) relative to starting a new job and the company's onboarding or orientation process. You can include your experience from one job or even compare experiences from two jobs.
• View the 2^nd video resource relative to creating the most useful and engaging employee handbooks. Share at least one (more if you wish) idea that you would consider using in a future management position and why you thought the idea(s) would be effective with new hires.

Part 2: Creating zero-tolerance policies relative to workplace discrimination and sexual harassment.

These are extremely important issues, so please read pages 141-146 thoroughly and view the related video resource. Please read the following 2 recent article resources specific to the hospitality industry:

Your task after reading the content in our textbook, the above two articles, and viewing the video resource is to:

• Read the Analyze the Situation 8.1 and answer the first two questions (labeling them Part 2 A and Part 2 B. This part of your answer must include facts to validate your answers, and therefore should also include APA citations and a listing of your sources.
• Share your thoughts and opinions about the two article resources above. This part of the assignment is strictly opinion-based and does not require any research, but you are welcome to include facts if you wish to. Your opinion statement should be at least 300 words in length.
