The strategic planfor a non-profit organization. They'll have to assess the market and its participantsand understand how that external environmentis going to affect the organization's strategy.Understanding the forces affecting youwill help you shape a strategy that deals with risksand positions you to compete effectively.Let's use Porter's Five Forces to conduct this assessment. My Strategic Planning Foundations coursecovers the method I'll use. What makes the method come aliveis seeing it applied to different contexts. In terms of competitive rivalry,Batter Up is a youth baseball and softballnon-profit organization. They serve a five-county area in the state. They're the biggest league for kidsfrom grade three to nine. They provide both rec leagues, which is about 80% of their business, and competitive elite prep leagues, which is the other 20%.There are no other rec baseball or softball offeringsin the area, but there are niche elite training leaguesacross the state. The competitive leagues are all fightingfor the same elite players. In terms of threat of new entrance, there's a low threat of new rec leagues emerging. But in recent years, more former minor leagueand collegiate baseball and softball playershave been forming for-profit elite teamsand engaging in elite inter-league play.In terms of threat of substitution,Batter Up isn't only competing for players, but also for charitable donation dollars.Parents have a lot of choicesof different youth activities to enroll their kids in.And there are plenty of other charitiesthey can donate to.This is a major threat for Batter Up.In terms of buyer power, parents have choices, and they're not afraid to make their desires known.Rec league parents have been complainingthat those leagues have been sufferingfrom getting less attention than the elite leagues.Elite league parents have also been complainingthat Batter Up's elite league isn't as competitiveas the other elite programs and they've beenmoving their kids from Batter Up's leaguesinto those other elite programs. From a supplier power standpoint,Batter Up's suppliers are volunteer coaches and umpires. They're always willing to pitch in.They play on municipal fields. There's low supplier power given Batter Up'sgovernment relationships.Looking at Batter Up's SWOT,they enjoy a great reputationfor running fun rec leagues. They have great relationships with their volunteersand with government agencies that ownand maintain the fields.Their weaknesses are they can't attract the same levelof talent as these for-profit elite leagues.Their opportunities include offeringother rec league sports, like basketball, volleyball, and other off-season programs. Finally, the threats they faceare more for-profit elite leaguesdraining their top players and coaches.Batter Up has a choice to make. They've got to decide if they want to continueserving the rec and elite leagueor if they want to focus on one versus the other.
