What are two potential confounding variables for their proposed study. identify at least one other potential dependent variable that would be appropriate given the hypothesis, being sure to label it "self-report," "behavioral," or "physiological."
Experiment: I would be interested in students learning math better when parents are involved vs. just the teacher teaching the student math.
Proposed sample demographics: Students aged 7- 14 years old.
Research hypothesis: The retention rate for participants in learning math when parents are more involved than just the teacher teaching the students math.
Null hypothesis: Parental involvement in learning math equals the same rate as the teacher teaching the student math.
Operational Variables:
Independent Variables, which has 2 levels.
Teaching style: Parental Involvement or Teacher teaching math
Parental involvement with math: includes activities and different exercises to reinforce the subject throughout the session.
Teacher teaching math: only include the teacher lecturing the topic.
Dependent Variable: The retention rate is based on the post-learning test given immediately after the test and retested 2 months after completion of the math class.
Experimental Design:
This study will be using a pretest-posttest design. The participants will attend 2 separate learning activities on 2 different topics in math; one will activity with parental involvement, and the other will be teacher-teaching based. The participants will split into two groups; group 1 will learn first addition and then subtraction with help from parental involvement. The second group will be learning subtraction first and then addition. Prior to the study, all participants will take a pretest to measure their knowledge of addition and subtraction. The retention will be measured with two posttests and (1) immediately after learning the math topic; (2) 2 months after learning the topics. The study I created is a within-subject design because all the subjects will be exposed to parental involvement and teacher teaching math. Lastly, the repeated measure design should counterbalance the 2 groups.
