Basis of Diagnosis

Tommy is a 22 year old that has returned from iraq with PTSD. He continually sees images of the war. He is angry, overwhelmed and wants to numb himself. Tommy drinks daily throughout the day at a local bar. He drinks until he passes out. He knows this is causing issues with his wife and worrying her, but continues to drink anyways. He is losing out on time with his wife and child because of his drinking. Tommy believes his drinking is justified. Tommy suffers from Alcohol Use Disorder

Applicable Theory

Tommy's alcohol use is currently severe. He has no want to stop drinking. His drinking is affecting his home life and he is unable to get a job. Tommy excuses his daily drinking until he passes out, as if it is not a problem, even though he is using it to cope.

Sociocultural Factors

Tommy was in the military where heavy drinking is present all around him. It is common for military personnel to drink to pass time between combat, celebrate combat victories or to cope (not think about) trauma. 85% of military personnel seek help for SUD (Alcohol Rehab Guide, 2023). During Tommy's deployment he saw comrades killed and believes he needs to drink. Tommy goes to bars and drinks with some buddies with whom he was deployed with. Tommy feels more comfortable with his buddies as opposed to with family; where he feels they think he is crazy.
