"Going to the Camps" (1942) Document 1. Context: This photograph depicts Japanese Americans in California being forced to evacuate their homes and move to the internment camps set up by the U.S. military. The Japanese Americans were given less than 48 hours to leave their homes, and were only allowed to bring with them a few suitcases worth of personal belongings. Many had to sell their homes, businesses, and other property for a fraction of their actual value.
