Document 5: "Life in the Camps" (1944) Context: These boys were all born in the United States and were American citizens. During World War 2, 125,000 Japanese-Americans (most of them American citizens) were forced to live in camps like this one, with armed U.S. Army soldiers patrolling the outside with rifles. A few who tried to escape were shot to death or severely injured by gunfire. During World War 2, no Japanese American was ever found guilty to trying to sabotage [damage] the American war effort.
