If the claimant was being paid cash under the table then yes, the surveillance method would almost be the only way to obtain proof that he was working in that capacity while also claiming disability benefits. If he was being paid legitimately by means in which he had to fill out proper employment tax forms and was registering with the state then his profits could be tracked, but not if he gets paid under the table. Not sure how far the state follows up on things like this considering there so many people claiming disability and get paid by other means of profit via cash, pretty sure it happens way more than the state is willing to invest time and money to do investigations. I do think insurance companies do though, if you claim workman's compensation insurance companies will do these surveillance investigations to see if these compensation claims are valid. For example, if someone who gets in a car wreck and claims they can't work or gets hurt on the job and cannot work due to injuries, if they receive compensation or get a settlement check, insurance companies have investigators who do surveillance on these individuals. The difference in the two points I was trying to make is working while claiming unemployment benefits and the other is working while claiming disability benefits both are illegal.
