GASB isn't immune to making mistakes, and some statements do get amended or superseded by future statements. But, those cases come with widespread support. GASB loses some of its neutrality and power by giving in to such a small group of those that disagree.I think GASB has set up the circuit breakers necessary to deal with those that fail to comply, by allowing auditors to give negative audits and allowing credit raters to downgrade ratings if necessary.

An obvious risk, is that if GASB would end up being a buffet instead of a meat at a fixed price, allowing entities to pick and choose which standards to comply with, rendering them useless.Another risk is allowing governments to legislate around standards, creating a slippery slope of political gamesmanship.A final risk would be not living up to its goal of providing standard accounting that is useful for all stakeholders, not just the government reporting.
