Part I - Challenging the Citizenship Question

The citizenship question on the 2020 Census questionnaire is a controversial matter. It could potentially cause an undercount of non-citizens and citizens in mixed-status households, resulting in negative impacts. There is also the possibility of non-citizens who may not participate in the census due to fear of consequences, leading to an inaccurate count and harming the process.

From a legal standpoint, I agree with the Supreme Court's decision that the Department of Commerce did not provide a satisfactory reasoning for including the citizenship question on the 2020 Census questionnaire. The Court found that the decision was violating the law and deemed the government's explanation for including the question as pretextual, stating that the actual motive was to enforce the Voting Rights Act rather than collect citizenship data (Department of Commerce v. New York).
