When reading Peak Nature, I was struck by the amout of facts and data that was mentioned because there was a lot of information I had never heard about and it was intriguing to learn about our environment in a new way. Firstly, I think the title was supported by the chapter because of not only the content, but because of it's deep quality and the way the author made me think intricately, multiple times. There were many quotes that grabbed my attention and made me think. For example, in the beginning there is a quote by Aldo Leopold that states " The first rule of intelligent thinking is to save all the parts." When I read this, I automatically agreed. When starting an assignment,mission, etc, it is key to think about what you have in front of you and how it can help you successfully complete your task. Each part has a job, and can be useful. I was also struck by two interesting new facts that I learned about how human's caloric intake is dependent upon insects, and about the ecosystem services of critters called detritivores who dine on organic debris. The last thing that stuck out to me took me a second to understand, but once I did, made so much sense. Thomas Berry said, "If human consciousness had evolved on the moon, it would be barren as the moon." And this was in regard to human development. People are more productive outdoors, not cooped up inside. In nature, there is inspiration, life, a sense of oneness. And Berry is saying that if we were to have relied on life on the moon, consciousness would have gone nowhere because of the lack of life. No life equals no growth, and what kind of inspiration is alive in a place with no opportunities to grow?
