Which of the 4 Different...Reflect on teachers you have had in the past and compare their classroom management behaviors to the 4 parenting styles. Look at the descriptions of student-centered and teacher-centered classrooms below. Which parenting style or styles is most associated with student-centered and which with teacher-centered? Briefly share your experience of different teaching styles and different classroom management approaches. Which teacher behaviors/practices/attitudes do you believe would lead to higher academic achievement and, based on what you have learned about child development, why? Which do you believe would lead to enhanced social development and why?
Student-centered classrooms:
- have mutually created and shared agreements about desirable and undesirable behaviors
- have active participants in learning who have voice and choice in what and how they will learn with guidance from the teacher
- discipline comes from self and rewards are mostly intrinsic (See Feedback and the Brain; praise would be an extrinsic motivator while a sense of competency would be intrinsic)
- consequences for undesirable behavior are generated by the community of learners and are determined by an individualized, case by case, approach
Teacher-centered classrooms:
- Teacher is the sole leader who creates rules and organizes the management to surveil and control behaviors
- Teacher takes responsibility of all learning materials
- Discipline is in the hands of the teacher usually through punishments and rewards that are extrinsic
- Consequences are fixed for all students
- Students are allowed limited responsibilities
