Project Case: Our Information Technology consulting firm, M-Tech, has been contracted to provide an online sales capability update to MEATS by JOHN which has headquarters in the Chicago metropolitan area. MEATS by JOHN has been having minor problems with orders placed through their current system over the past several months. Their online services have not been kept up to date and a small percentage of Customer orders were incorrect in 2021. In some isolated cases, orders were completed by their service but the order information was not transmitted to the headquarters location for completion. Customers were disappointed in the order handling process. MEATS by JOHN is a well-known family owned chain and has a reputation for high quality meat products. With the experience of disappointed Customers, the MEATS by JOHN staff felt a directional change was needed to improve the quality of the ordering process. In order to maintain the control of the food products offered to Customers and to provide an exceptional experience for Customers, this project has been approved to begin. Annual sales were $48.24M US in 2021. The MEATS by JOHN ERP system handles cash/credit card transactions, sales, and financial reporting. The ERP system has the Application Program Interfaces (API) for the interfaces needed to manage cash and credit card sales on the website and the ability to report sales. The M-Tech solution will need to handle the establishment of an online storefront for Internet sales. The project requires adding this capability to the company website (MEATS by JOHN already has a website). The sales application needs to have both desktop and Smartphone capabilities. M-Tech needs to determine if the store website capability should be built using the company web hosting platform or if an outsourced solution should be utilized for the project (contracting for a web-based store application modified for the MEATS by JOHN brand). M-Tech is responsible for the determination of either option and will have project management responsibility for all aspects of the project. The Internet based application will need to have sales performance and site visit reports to measure performance and effectiveness of the business approach. The inventory and financial reports will be provided by the company ERP system. Both financial systems will need reporting for system reconciliation. Due to the nature of the increasing need for an Internet presence, any additional enhancements due to market changes will be considered for future phases of development after the initial launch. From our review of comparable project efforts at M-Tech, the estimates to support this project will take approximately 6 months of development/configuration and roughly cost $167,000 US
