Writing Prompt 2:
An elegant model of job performance states:
Employee Job Performance = Worker Motivation x Worker Ability x Organizational Support[1]
Weve begun to address the individual characteristics (Ability) that lead to performance and we addressed motivation earlier this semester.
Identify what factors (variables) from your textbook may contribute to the Organizational Support category of variables[2]. Similarly, consider other things/resources an organization provides to its employees. Anything an organization provides, or fails to provide, to a worker that can limit/improve the workers performance may be considered support. Note: support is NOT the same as salary/incentives for work (thats part of motivation, not support).
In other words, other than motivation, what things in the organizations control can completely quash or dramatically improve job performance? Use variables and models from your textbook to discuss these organizational support factors.
Your answer should:
- Identify variable(s)[3] you believe fall under the category of Organizational Support
- For each variable, justify or rationalize why it fits under the Organizational Support label
- For each variable, discuss how that variable could, in its absence/presence affect performance.
- Specifically lay out what you expect the variable will do to performance and how it will affect performance.
- For example, you may say ethical climate is a type of organizational support variable. You need to say that a more (i.e., higher level of) ethical climate allows employees to trust their leaders and coworkers, which will lead them to take risks on new ideas, and to avoid CWBs, because of their belief in the ethical climate. In this way, ethical climate contributes to employee performance positively
- Thus, make sure this part of your answer includes
- The level of the variable (high/medium/low) that will lead to what level of performance (high/medium/low)
- The mechanism which explains that (how does that variable affect performance)
- Providing support from chapters in your textbook will be important, and you may find chapters we have NOT covered will offer very good information.
Like other writing assignments, this assignment must be
- Submitted on time, via D2L
- 300-700 words
- Written clearly and logically organized to address the all parts of the prompt.
