You are one step from completing the first draft of your Literature Review. But before you start mapping it out, think back to the leadership theories that you've covered in the program (Servant Leadership, Transformational and Transactional Leadership, Trait Theory, etc). What theory(ies) can serve as a basis for understanding your problem? For example, if your problem is about a lack of collaborative practices in a public organization, and the literature that you've reviewed so far emphasized that the level of collaboration can be increased by creating shared-power environments where collaboration is strongly encouraged (Lo, Allard, Wang, & Chiu, 2018), then most likely you will choose Servant Leadership as your focus. There might be other settings that require a completely different approach, so don't assume that one of the most popular types of leadership is "the best fit." Also, pay attention to what theories previous research studies utilized for selecting your own theoretical framework.

Background Information

A theoretical framework serves as a blueprint for your study, which allows you to build a strong foundation for your Literature Review. It defines the concepts that you will use and the logic related to "connecting the dots" in your Literature Review. Osanloo & Grant (2016) outlined well how and why theoretical frameworks are used in research, and while the article is more about higher levels of research, it is still applicable to the Masters level Capstone as well. Read and reflect on the possible theoretical framework for your own study.
