You are the charge nurse in a critical care unit of a hospital. One of your responsibilities is to schedule RNs, LPNs, and nurses' aides to provide care for patients 24-7. in general, everyone tries to avoid scheduling major surgeries that require the patient to spend postoperative time in the critical care unit just before holidays. Unfortunately, emergencies are quite unpredictable and sometimes the patient loads becomes unexpectedly heavy, which requires you to schedule some people to work a normal shift and others to be on normal call in case there is unplanned need. While most employees live nearby, a number of them have families out of town and like to travel to see them over the holidays. Identify alternatives for meeting the staffing needs and prepare to make a recommendation to the director of nursing.
