You are the Global Supply Chain Director of Champion USA, a leading US-based

global organisation that specialises in sportswear. Currently, Champion is ranked

number 8 globally, while Nike and Adidas occupy the number 1 and number 2

positions, respectively. Champion specialises in sports and streetwear and supplies

uniforms to athletic, basketball, and football teams around the world. Currently, most

of the company's suppliers are based in Mexico, where good quality cotton textiles are

produced and transformed into the rugged, no-frills, timeless gear with a dose of retrocharm

for which Champion is renowned. The Champion brand has become

synonymous with superior quality, affordability and comfort. This has been achieved

by a heavy reliance on a wide network of trusted suppliers in Mexico and other South

American countries with whom you have developed strong relationships. Functions

within Champion such as logistics, operations planning, and materials sourcing are

primarily forecast driven, enabling you to meet customer demand both in terms of

service and quality.

Recently, however, the Board has noticed that the leaders in the sportswear sector

(Nike and Adidas) have gained market share by offering garments that are made of

innovative technical fabrics such as microfiber, and is considering including this

technology in the company's product range. The highest quality technical fabrics are

manufactured in Germany and China, geographies that are unfamiliar to you. The CEO

has tasked you with preparing a report on the impact on the supply chain of such a

change.
