You are the volunteer coordinator for the 2018 U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship hosted by the USGA. As you prepare your volunteer recruitment plan, you realize that you are desperately in need of volunteers for the transportation committee. You decide to conduct a quick survey using items from the Volunteer Functions Inventory to determine what the community members near the course look for in a volunteer role. Your goal, of course, is to find out what will lead them to volunteer for your event. You send out 1,500 surveys to local residents and receive 550 responses. The results overwhelm- ingly suggest that community members want their volunteer experiences to include social gatherings that allow time with friends and participation in activities favored by their significant others. They view sport as a meaningful avenue for social inter- action and would be eager to volunteer if social interaction were promoted as part of the experi- ence. The survey results also suggest that some members of this group value career-related devel- opment opportunities.
