You have been employed by an insurance company to assess a group of claimants who have been involved in accidents. These individuals allege that they now suffer memory problems as a result of their injuries. Your task is to determine which [if any) of these people are suffering genuine problems, and which (if any] are malingering. You assess each person individually using two memory tests. Memory Test 1 is a measure of explicit, shorttenn memory that involves reading lists Memory Test 1, gathered in 2005 from a healthy sample of 1006 Australian adults, show a mean score of 20 [SD = 2]. Memory Test 2 is a measure of implicit memory to gauge malingering. It involves showing the individual a set of 100 pictures, one at a time for 3 seconds each, then presenting them with pairs of pictures, one from the original set and one unfamiliar, and asking them to identify the one from the original set. Although this test appears supercth to be challenging, norrning studies have shown that errors are actually very rare, even among people with severely impaired short term memory and serious brain injury. The norms for Memory Test 2, gathered in 1900 from a Portuguese sample of 234 adults show a mean score of 99 (SD = 0.50]. The insurance company wishes to identify (a) impaired individuals who are not malingering, defined as performing in the bottom 10% of the normal population for Memory 'Ihst 1 {T score less than 3'7] but within the top 99% on Memory Test 2; and [b] possible malingerers who score in the bottoru 10% on Memory Test 1 and the bottom 1% on Memory Thst 2. Claimants' test scores are listed below. Please round your final answers to 2 decimal places. Table 1. Memo Test 1 scores.
