You have just been hired as the Quality Manager at a machine shop that produces and supplies flight critical parts for a major aerospace manufacturer. This customer represents 75% of your business. You are their key supplier and there is very high demand for the parts you produce. However, you are late on shipments and holding up the customers assembly line. The customer is threatening to discontinue doing business with you unless something changes.

When you arrive at work the first day, you observe that there are piles of work in progress (WIP) and excess inventory everywhere. Tools and equipment are not well maintained. There appears to be low morale amongst the employees. There are quality problems resulting in many parts being scraped or reworked. One of the biggest problems is coming from the welding process. Additionally, the quality control department is a bottleneck in the process resulting in many parts waiting for inspection.
