You have to prepare for a Mock Refugee Protection Hearing of a hypothetical Turkish national by using the Scenario/Narrative that has been created for you. However, that should be only the base of your case. You have the freedom to explore further by researching Turkey's country conditions in regard to the violation of human rights, minority rights, etc. You will be divided into groups, and roles will be assigned to each of you. Here is the General Guideline for your task:

. 2. The Refugee Case used in this assignment is based on the story of Ahmet from Turkey, but you should have also your own research in order to expand the case and have your own approach. The Story is summarized below. In all groups we will have a role of: a) Member of the IRB/RPD b) Minister's Counsel c) Claimant's Counsel (Immigration Consultant/Lawyer) d) Claimant e) Expert Witness (optional) Ahmet's Story Ahmet identifies as gay andand has kept his sexual orientation a secret from his family all of his life Ahmet is currently outside his country of Turkey which is his only country of nationality. He made the claim at the Canada Port of Entry using a false passport. Ahmet is unable and unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country by reasons of fear of persecution. Ahmet did seek protection from authorities in his country of nationality in October 2016 and again in February 2018. No investigation or action was taken to stop the persecution since the authorities themselves were playing a big role in the harassment. In fact, Ahmet was a victim of severe beating by his police academy classmates on December 20th 2018; he was also hospitalized as a result of more beating by members of the police force in February 2019. In March 2019, Ahmet was forced to leave the police academy where he was studying to become a police officer. He was told by his colleagues that if he did not leave the police academy, he would disappear and no one would find him. Ahmet was forced to use a false passport to leave Turkey in order to avoid altercations with the authorities. Ahmet is unable to return to his country of nationality due to threats made against him in November 2019 by members of the police force who held Ahmet at gun point. They threatened to kill him if they ever saw him again. Ahmet's parents are not aware of Ahmet's sexual orientation and they will not accept him if they found out. Ahmet's only relationship was with a man named Ivan from 2015 - 2017, however, Ivan's parents were against the relationship and Ahmet received call from them in October 2017 threatening to kill him if he did not stay away from Ivan. Ivan's father had relatives in the Police department in Turkey Role of Minister's Counsel: 1. To advocate for the rejection of Ahmet's claim 2. Takes an adversarial approach against Ahmet and his counsel during the hearing 3. Examines Ahmet by asking he and his counsel questions Role of IRB Member: 1. To ask questions to any and all parties to gain a greater understanding of the facts 2. To render a final decision of whether Ahmet will be granted refugee status Role of RCIC/Lawyer: 1. To advocate for Ahmet's status as a refugee 2. To respond to questions, and to give submissions at the hearing Role of Refugee Claimant 1. To answer questions 2. To advocate for his status as a refugee Role of Expert Witness 1. Provide evidence and answer questions
