you will have an opportunity to further explore protective factors and their role in supporting children's development and learning.Protective factors are characteristics of individuals, families, communities or the larger society that help to reduce risk and the effects of adverse experiences.

The Center for the Study of Social Policy developed the Strengthening Families framework to engage programs and communities in building five key protective factors including: parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and social and emotional competence of children. In this activity, you will read a brief overview of each of these protective factors. Then, fill out a case study about a young African American mother and her daughter from infancy through kindergarten. As you work your way through the case study, take note of the protective factors that are present in the lives of the mother and her daughter.
