4.7 Buck’s method (Example 4.3) might be applied to data with both continuous and categorical variables, by replacing the categorical variables by a set of dummy variables, numbering one less than the number of categories. Consider properties of this method when

(a) the categorical variables are fully observed and

(b) the categorical variables are subject to missing values (Little and Rubin 1987, section 3.4.3).
