A number of highly conjugated organic compounds have found use as sunscreens. One of the more widely used is 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), whose structure is shown in the margin. This compound is effective in absorbing so-called UV-B radiation (with wavelengths between 280 and 320 nm, responsible for most sunburns). Suggest a simple synthesis of this compound using a crossed aldol condensation.
