3. Conduct a survey to find out how students on your campus prefer to define their identities.

Ask blacks whether they prefer black, African American, Afro-American, or another label. Ask whites how they identify their race. Ask Hispanic students what term they use to describe their ethnicity. Compare your findings to those of the U.S. Department of Labor discussed in the section “Monitor Labels.” Do students on your campus reflect national preferences? Go beyond the findings discussed in this chapter to ask students from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries how they identify their ethnicities.
