Perhaps. But it has pretty clearly not happened in Washington [State]. This state has executed three men, none who claimed he didn’t do it. In 1993, it hanged Westley Alan Dodd, who owned up to raping and murdering little boys and said he’d do it again; in 1994, it hanged Charles Campbell, who came back from prison and murdered the witnesses against him; and in 1998, it executed by lethal injection Jeremy Sagastegui, who murdered two women and a three-year-old boy, and who wanted to die.
