8.2 Identify and describe the stages of relational escalation and de-escalation.

Research has determined that relationships, particularly intimate or romantic ones, tend to develop in stages of escalation and de-escalation. Interpersonal communication is affected by the stage of a relationship; in turn, movement through the stages is facilitated by interpersonal communication.

The five stages of relational escalation are (1) preinteraction awareness, (2) initiation, (3) exploration,

(4) intensification, and (5) intimacy.

The six stages of relational de-escalation are (1) turmoil,

(2) stagnation, (3) de-intensification, (4) individualization,

(5) separation, and (6) post-interaction.
