Find a short article from your field (or part of a long article or a selection from your text book for an advanced course). Choose a piece written at the highest level of technicality you can understand, and then rewrite a version of that piece suitable for a layperson, as in the example in Figure 2.5. Exchange your document with a classmate from a different major, and see if he or she can understand your version. Read that student’s version, and use a document comment system (such as track changes in Word) to provide comments evaluating the level of technicality. Submit to your instructor a copy of the original, your new version, and your evaluation of your neighbor’s translation.
