The use of sky lanterns has been a contested issue. In 2019, in certain parts of the U.K. there was a campaign to ban the use of sky lanterns. Some groups cited risks of fire and damage to wildlife, property, aircrafts, and even lives in order to justify the ban. Yet others focus on the contamination and littering caused by the use of these sky lanterns. However, manufacturers, suppliers, and even some consumers believe these arguments misrepresent the issue and misinterpret irresponsible use of sky lanterns as an inherent flaw in the design of sky lanterns.

Organizations such as the Country Landowners’ Association have been campaigning for a ban for several years.

They have been successful in persuading around 50 local authorities, but sky lanterns are still in widespread use.

Write a letter to the local authorities supporting the ban or arguing against the ban. Research the issue and present an informed persuasive argument in the best manner possible (as outlined in the chapter). Anticipate and address your audience’s questions, such as:

• Is there a problem with the use of sky lanterns? Why?

• If yes, is the problem significant enough to justify a ban?

• What are the alternative solutions that may be available?

• What is the situation in other countries?
