It could be a waste of time if we got the theories wrong and missed the most important ones. However, it is more likely that our capital structure theories would still be useful. If firms do not readjust their capital structure, the capital structure theories (forces) may mean that there is a lot of money left on the table by managers. If you can join such a firm, you may be able to optimize its capital structure and thereby save the firm a lot of money.
