Green Hardware Manufacturing produces and sells hardware products throughout the western portion of the United States. The primary source of revenue for the company comes from sales to individual hardware stores. The company has divided its sales territory into seven districts, with a sales manager in charge of each district. The individual sales managers try to travel around from store to store and take sales orders directly from store owners. The sales orders are then sent to company headquarters in Los Angeles, where they are processed. The present procedure is for the sales manager to write his or her own name on the sales order. At the end of each month, the company’s accountant prepares a summary of sales by each district and for each product. This process, however, is extremely difficult and usually takes the accountant about 4 days to complete.
