5. Career Activity: The first impressions you make when interviewing for a job are based mainly on nonverbal communication. Before meeting in small groups of three to five, take the First Impressions Quiz from Quintessential Careers (Hansen, 2016)

-impressions-quiz. When finished, meet as a group and complete the following:

a. Make a list of the nonverbal items that play a role in creating a good first impression—narrow them to the top five. Now make a list of nonverbal items that could cause a poor first impression—

narrow them to the top five.

b. Refer to the First Impressions Quiz. If your group feels comfortable sharing results, identify how many scores were in the great, average, or needs work categories (above 80 is great;

below 60 needs work). Or, have each person write his/her score on a piece of paper along with the nonverbal item that gives him/her the most trouble and put it into an envelope.

Mix up the papers and then arrange them into categories.

c. Discuss the nonverbal items that give group members problems and see whether your text or group member has suggestions for how to improve.

Refer to Chapter 8 for additional information.

Be prepared to share your lists with other groups.
